An inspiring journey rooted in the realities of young people
Born in Peru and arriving in Canada at a young age, Emilio Zaga Mendez grew up between Montréal-Nord and Laval in a family with an immigration background. His journey, shaped by important transitions and defining choices, reflects the reality of many young people whose educational paths are not always linear.
From an early age, Emilio developed a strong passion for sports, media and recreational activities. An honour student in elementary school in his home country, he stood out both academically and athletically, particularly in mini-basketball and soccer, while also taking his first steps in sports journalism through school radio and national television. This curiosity and early involvement became key drivers of perseverance throughout his journey.
Teen years: a matter of adaptation
During his teenage years, his family chose to immigrate to Montreal—a major life change that required him to start over in a new country, a new language and a new culture. After a year in a welcoming and French language integration class, Emilio had to adapt to a new school system and find his place, a pivotal stage experienced by many young people from immigrant backgrounds.
It was in high school that sports, the arts and school engagement became powerful tools for integration, motivation and perseverance. A former student at Antoine-de-Saint-Exupéry High School, Emilio became actively involved in school life. He contributed to collective athletic achievements, including regional and provincial futsal championships, while also participating in community-building artistic projects such as producing the annual musical show, joining the improv team and hosting the “Secondaire en spectacle” talent event. These experiences strengthened his sense of belonging, built his confidence and allowed him to thrive in an environment where his talents were recognized.
Through his journey, Emilio highlights the importance of school as a living environment. He reminds us that school can be a place of belonging, where differences become strengths and where every student can find space to express themselves, get involved and envision their future. His message resonates particularly with youth from immigrant backgrounds, but also with all those who doubt themselves, are searching for their place or are facing challenges.
